The Institute of Cultural Heritage Law affiliated with the Law School of Renmin University of China was established in June 2007, which is the first research institute engaged in the academic research and professional education of cultural heritage law in China. Aiming at promoting the systematization of the curriculum of cultural heritage law in Chinese higher education as well as fostering the professional talents with master or doctoral degrees majoring in this field, the Institute establishes extensive cooperation with a number of relevant universities, colleges and other academic & educational institutions as well as keeps good relationships with scholars in the field of cultural heritage law, both interiorly and abroad, providing a platform for academic exchange and cooperation for those institutions and individuals that focus on the rule of law of cultural heritage protection.
Relying on the Law School of Renmin University of China, the Institute sets up a strong and capable team for the teaching and research of cultural heritage law, consisting of the backbone professors devoting to this field and those specializing in various related subjects such as intellectual property law and international law, as well as the experts from other universities, academic institutions and administration departments of cultural affairs and cultural heritage in the national government. Headed by Professor WANG Yunxia, the Institute currently includes 8 teachers from the Law School of Renmin University of China, and 7 visiting researchers from other academic and governmental institutions in the field of cultural heritage protection.
Up to June 2018, the Institute has cultivated 12 doctoral students (11 already with Ph.D. degrees and 1 doctoral candidate) and 20 master students (17 with master’s degrees and 3 master's candidates). The Institute also takes charge of research programs on cultural heritage law commissioned and sponsored by various institutions and organizations such as State Administration of Cultural Heritage, Chinese Academy of Cultural Heritage, Renmin University of China etc., including “Study on legal issues concerning the Return of cultural property looted during the Second World War” sponsored National Social Science Foundation (in progress), “Comprehensive study on the laws and regulations of cultural heritage in foreign countries”, “Research on the theories and methods of the exercise of police power in non-state-owned immovable cultural heritage”, “Solutions of the conflicts of laws between Cultural Relics Protection Law and other legal institutions: Jurisprudential basis and International Experience ”, and “Research on the Course of Cultural Heritage Law” etc..
